Ladies and Gentlemen:
Yesterday was a good day to be on the highway. I was coming home from
Olathe, Kansas. A light, drizzling snow was falling intermittently from a
pewter sky. Despite the weather, long skeins of wild geese winging their way
north were commonplace. I do believe Spring is on its way once again.
My van was piled with tires, tools, and spare parts. The posted speed limit
was 70mph, but I was making between 55 and 60 because my rearview mirror was
filled by the smiling chrome grill of a ZB Magnette that I had perched up on
the tow dolly. Yahoo! After a couple of years of casual looking while making
regular savings deposits to the ZB Fund, and several months of diligent
searching, I finally found the Magnette driver that I knew was out there.
For the record, it's a '59, car number 33236, probably built in July or
August of 1958, and is possibly the world's only robin's egg blue Magnette.
For you folks across the pond, the robin (Turdus migratorious) is a
red-breasted, grey-cloaked bird akin to your thrushes and is a well-known
harbinger of spring. As appropriate as the color might have been for
yesterday's journey, it will soon change. Perhaps, one of those more staid
grey hues that the cars were originally offered in.
I also got lucky and picked up a ZB parts car back in December, so the
Interior Highlands Magnette Sanitorium is becoming a reality. Incidentally,
over the past few months I have located 15 to 20 Z-types for sale across the
US. Most of them are in very bad condition. Some of them are quite cheap.
All of them would require work. The best ones seem to sell fast. If anyone
is looking for a Magnette e-mail me privately and I will share my
information with you.
