windshield rod removal

Here's some trivia for a Saturday....
How do I remove the windshield support rod? Does the baseplate come off 
and then the rod just unscrews from the upper bracket behind the mirror? 
I know it's probably not that delicate, but I thought I'd ask before I 
start turning something and cause damage. 
Just want to spruce up the rusty bugger that's in plain view.
