All,

I've seen some discussion on synthetic oils in MGs, so I thought I'd
share my experience. When I first bought my 73 B (70K miles on original
motor, no rebuild, no nothing!), it wasn't using any oil at all. No
drips, no smoke, nada. I changed it to 20W-50 Mobil 1 and am now using
a bit of oil. I'm not sure qhy this would be, perhaps it has an easier
time of blowing by the rings. Not even a quart every 100 miles though,
so not a big deal.

On the other hand, something worth doing not only with an MG but any
manual trans. car, is Redline MTL. It's red, it's thick (classified as
gear oil) and it works brilliantly. Even swap for 10w30 motor oil. You
can actually feel a difference. I started using it in my daily
driver/track/autocross Integra GS-R, and was suddenly able to shift into
first without double clutching at nearly 30mph (handy on an autox
course), and shifting in general got much better. Definitely worth
doing in an MG.

BTW...do **NOT** put plain old synthetic in a manual transmission! It's
too slick, as syncros need a bit of friction to function properly.
Redline MTL takes this into account, things like Mobil 1 do not.
