In all the discussion of increasing/decreasing tire pressures on one end
or the other to "increase" traction, there is one basic point I think we
are missing.
If the tires are inflated to the correct pressure (not necessarily the
recommended pressure), ANY increase or decrease of pressure will result
in a reduction of availible traction. Thus if by changing the air
pressure of the tires results in an increase in traction, then the tires
were not at the correct pressure to begin with. For maximum grip, there
is only a very small range of pressure on a given tire, on a given car.
While adjusting the tire pressures at the track/auto-x course is a time
honored method of tuning the balance of the car, in the final analysis
you are DECREASING the grip on one end or the other to achieve that
balance.
