Do you mean dashpots or just the dampers?
The engine will not run (possibly not even start and idle) with the dashpots
removed as it is the depression above the piston when the dashpot is in
place that causes the piston to rise and increase the air and fuel supply to
the engine to meet the demands of the engine and the throttle opening.
The engine will start and run with the dampers removed but will accellerate
poorly as there will be no temporary enrichening of the mixture as the
throttle is opened.
