Just a shot in the dark, but some of the '80 B's used a ballast resistor 
system.  
The idea of the system being that the resistor was bypassed during cranking to 
get more juice to the coil.  Seeing as how it started right up when you got a 
jump (meaning the system was now accessing 2 batteries) I would say the coil 
was not getting enough juice, or it's not properly using the juice it is 
getting.  So 
either something is wrong with the bypass circuit (starter relay), or there is 
something wrong with the coil or ignition wires.  Just a guess......
