Allen:
Don't let the address fool you. I learn many things every day.
I know that the goop was used on Triumph engines, but it is only on the
center of the cover. Not covering the bolts. It also usually sticks
really well and does not fall off.
I think I will get back to MGB questions, those I am more
familiar with.
Kelvin.

Oops! The bondo was put there by the factory. The TR6 and
Spit/Mid engines had the gunk smeared on the timing cover to damp chain
noise. One big dollop in the middle changed the resonance of the tin
cover and quieted down the front end noise.
Don't worry, it does not affect performance and I don't think
that concours judges will be looking for it.

I am obviously not at the car, (I work between reading lists), so I
can't
check, but I am pretty sure it covered the bolts on the cover, as though
it
was smeared on after mounting the cover.
Not that I doubt you, Kelvin, esp. considering your revered e-mail
address,
and the fact that British Leyland is capable of almost anything (except
fixing
a leak), but can anyone else verify the claim that the Bondo was FACTORY
INSTALLED?
If I order a new one from Moss, do I have to supply my own Bondo? Did
they
paint the Bondo black with the rest of the engine?
