I did this a few years ago while the radiator was off the car (can' remember
why).
On my '73 MGB there is one side of the bottom tank that is lower than the
other. I drilled a 1/4" hole in the center of that lower area. To this I
silver soldered a brass 1/2 coupling. I think I had to make it by buying a
full 1/8" NPT coupling and hacksaw it in half. I recommend using silver solder
to get strength so you don't twist the thing off. Silver solder has to get
really hot. I have an oxyacetylene torch. It would be very difficult to do
with propane. MAPP gas might get hot enough. Maybe someone can advise us.
If this sounds like more than you want to tackle, a radiator shop could do
this pretty easily, especially if you brought them the radiator already out of
the car. Does yours need cleaning? If so, do it then.
It is sure nice to have a petcock on the radiator. You can drain the system
without having a huge mess. My '73 did not have one on the side of the block
either. I understand these don't work that well anyway as the antifreeze runs
down the side of the block and goes everywhere. The first time I had to drain
the system I had to pull off the lower hose to drain the system, another mess.
Now, I just put the galvanized pan that I also use for draining the oil under
the petcock, open it and go do something else for five minutes.
