Not sure if you mean for the carbs or for other bit's and pieces. If you
mean to clean greased items, yes I imagine it would be good. Problem is it
costs $10.00 AUD ($6.50 USD) a can! And it doesn't go very far at all, even
if left to soak.. :( I've been through, what 3 bottles for the carbs etc. My
carbs were filthy to say the least.. I've just heard from another Lister
that oven cleaner is supposed to be very good. Might give that a try next
time as that foams and is scrubbable (a new word ;) so it may work quite
well!
Back to the carbs - Yes I've been using Carb Cleaner to clean all the loose
oil and grease off (BTW - STP Carb Cleaner sucks!, Wynns (Aus/nz only?) and
CRC (aus/nz only too?) work well). But the carbs themselves ie the Float
Bowl, the linkages etc etc all the little pieces (nuts, bolts, springs etc)
get covered in a sort of greasy tarnish that won't come off with carb
cleaner. They need to be brushed with a soft wire brush/wire wool etc to
bring the orig aluminium,steel back. Obviously this depends on the condition
of the carbs - and whether or not you can be bothered cleaning to this
extent!!! Mine have never been off the car in 30 years (we got this car with
28,000mls on it in 86 - it had a respray in that time - owner went off the
colour - go figure! Went from Green to Black. It's now green again - crikey
I can cr** on!! ;) ANYWAYS - After removing all the tarnish, embedded grease
etc I use some Autosol metal polish. They come up extremely well! I make
sure I don't rub the brush very hard as not to scratch the metal. Carb
cleaner works well, but I wanted to get them to an 'as new' condition. These
carbs won't be on the car very long as I'll be upgrading to 1 3/4's for
racing so when I take them off in a few months I want them to be in nice
order, to keep around for a rainy day.
Oh one other thing, people must think I'm crazy shining up old bolts etc
when you can replace with new - my carb kit didn't come with all those bits
and pieces - only the essentials. Besides, I back my extraodinary behaviour
with the 'originality' argument. ;)) Yeah, thats me, Mr. Originality. ;)
Sarcasm people, sarcasm! <G> :) Well, I keep the A original, not the GT -
it's had too many changes already (LHD to RHD etc).
