Chris,

An interesting question that I hadn't checked in 12 years of ownership. I
always just put five quarts in my '73 MGB.

Actually my manual says that the sump capacity is 9 pints (USA). It also
states that the oil cooler is 0.9 pints (USA). Total capacity is 9.9 pints
(USA), almost 5 quarts. It appears that 5 quarts is 0.1 pints extra. I'm going
to continue with the five quarts... I probably leave that much left on the
instide of the bottles.

The really important thing is to always check the dip stick (any car) with the
car on level ground after you change it and make sure it comes up to the mark.
Preferably, after starting it and letting the filter fill and then shutting it
off and giving a couple of minutes for all of it to run down to the sump.
Don't forget to check the filter for leaks during those first moments. Also
important is doing it every three months or 3,000 miles (whichever comes
first) AND ALWAYS CHANGE THE FILTER TOO!

Personally, I use Valvoline 10W-30 in the winter and 40 or 50W straight weight
in the summer (Hot here in Texas, you know). I also use a Fram oil filter. The
last two sentences will undoubtably raise a lot controversy. Everyone has
their preferences.
