G'day All
Since my 'new' 62 MGA 1600 MK II has not run for 3 years, I am changing
the oil and filter. Then i will squirt light weight oil ijn the cylinders
and let it sit for a week or so before giving the engine a partial turn
with the crank, squirt more oil, sit, crank, squirt, etc, I also plan to
remove the valve cover and spray the valve assys with oil. Then I will
try to start it with a battery. I also plan to change the transmission
oil and antifreeze. Is this approach sound?
Now some questions.
In which direction do i crank the engine with the crank (first experience
with a crank)?
Can I remove the oil pan without removing the engine?
I would like to examine the inside of the pan for sludge and perhaps metal
shavings (altho i saw/felt none when I drained the sump) and clean the
sump fileter as suggested in the manual.
Also the manual refers to a 'flushing oil ' in reference to flushing the
engine lube system - what is flushing oil?
When i removed the oil filter (I gained a great appreciation of todays
screw on type filter as I did so), I ended up with the filter cannister,
and a 2" thick cylinder like object which is attched to the oil cooler (i
assume this is the valve assy). In the new filter box (i have both a Fram
and Unipart filter) there are three o'ring type gaskets.. When i removed
the assy from the car there was no o'ring between the 'valve' and the
block (should there be one - if so which of the three should it be?), one
easily removed gasket betweeen the cannister and valve, and what appears
to be another gasket deeply inserted into valve assy beneath the easily
removed gasket. Is this correct? should there be two gaskets between the
valve and cannister? if so which gasket goes where?
I have the original workshop manual but of course this is not discussed at
all.
