Several guys (David D., Larry M., et al) have unequivocally advocated Webers
to replace the Z-S carb on MGs. A word of warning for those who live in
"enlightened" states like
California - you won't get the car to pass smog unless you buy a "smog
legal" downdraft Weber and associated manifold (and this may no longer be
available for MGs). There is only one "smog legal" downdraft Weber, any
ordinary 32/36 DGV will not cut it, and there are NO sidedraft Webers that
are smog legal.

Lots of states only require smog compliance on cars 20 years old or newer,
unfortunately California has put the cutoff at 1973, with a 30-year sliding
exemption starting in 2004. which means that ALL Z-S carb equipped MGs will
still be under smog inspection until at least the year 2005 (for 1975 cars).
The final 1980 MGs will not be out from under the smog umbrella until 2010.
All this is predicated on our Legislature keeping their grubby mitts off the
current system, as the air gets worse, they may decide to take away the
exemptions that they so magnanimously passed last year.

So Lawrie Alexander knows of what he speaks when he advocates rebuilding the
Z-S carb rather than switching to a Weber. You will save lots of headaches
at the smog station if you do.

Cheers,
Paul Kile
