sterring column

The time has come, the walrus said, to replace the bearings in my sterring
column.  I can grasp the wheel and move it about 1/2" in either direction.

Has anyone replaced the bearings before?  How difficult was it?  How is the
sterring column removed and the inner and outer shaft seperated?
