George,
Did the distributor get loose? Check the timing. If off, reset the timing. Are
the points in good shape and set right? Are there any loose ignition primary
(or secondary) wires? If so, correct as necessary. If not, proceed with next
paragraph.
Did the idle get faster recently? Look for other air leaks including checking
the vacuum advance diaphragm.
Plugs are cheap, install a new set. Pull one wire off at a time. Do they all
seem to make about the same difference when they're off? Did you get knocked
on your butt while doing this? If so, you might need a new plug wire set. If
no change, go to next paragraph.
Check head bolts for correct torque. Re-set the valves (hot) paying special
attention to the intakes. Did one get tight? OK now? If not, proceed with next
paragraph.
Watch the rocker arm action at an idle with the valve cover off. Are they all
traveling about the same? If not, a new cam shaft and lifters might be in
order.
Do a compression check. What are the readings? A valve job might be in order.
Do you have or a have friend have a Color tune? I find this gadget very
helpful. You could check the mixture. Don't get into adjusting the mixture
without one.
Stay on the list with your results.
