Greetings all,
Once again the age old question....how come the MGB needs that darn spacer
and those peskey shims?????? My (fill in the blank) doesn't have them, and
it's the best damn car on the planet.
It's like this, guys.
The spacer, when shimmed correctly, forms another column INSIDE the hub,
more than tripling the strength of the spindle, and transferring the
bending load inboard.
Think of the spindle as a rod. Now envision the 'column' formed by the nut
as a cap, then the center race of the outer bearing, then the spacer, then
the race of the inner bearing, all supported by the large raised area upon
which the seal works. As you can see, the spindle now becomes a rod
surrounded by a column. You now have THREE surface areas to share the
bending load that the spindle is subjected to as you zip 'round that bend
in your MG.
Good engineering, but if you remove the spacer, you can actually cause the
spindle to snap because of fatigue; inconvenient, to say the least.
The shims are easy, if a little finicky to install; don't shortchange
yourself and your passengers.
Safety Fast!
Regards,
Ray
