I'll agree that you cannot rebuild a motor in situ. You can, however,
remove the sump, oil pump, re-ring the pistons, replace rod bearings, and
<replace the camshaft without removing the engine. I did it last winter.
OK, I'll admit it: I'm impressed. The question remaining is: is it
worth it to avoid removing the engine, renting a hoist and a stand?
I guess that's a personal preference....
