I was just looking at my SU carb manual today so I thought I would actually
check to see what it says on dashpot oil.
And the official word is - "... top up the piston damper with thin engine
SAE 20W/50 until the level is 0.5 in below the top of the hollow piston
rod." This was on the HS chapter. The HD carbs also reference the same oil.
This is the word of Haynes anyway which has been the official word, at
least for me. And my Haynes manuals are from the late 70s - the SU
Carburettors Owners Workshop Manual says "to 1976" (the date of publication).
However, I still would not recommend such an oil for winter use in areas
such as here (Montana) where temperatures get well below zero. That is
where I stick with my mineral oil.
