Thanks Barney,

  I was speculating that what might make it an autotransformer might be
the common connection at one end.  Glad I didn't have to look it up. 
I'm not even sure where my old textbooks are since we moved our
household a few years back when I retired.  Lots of stuff still in
boxes.
