Mike, since taking the Workshop Manual recommended 'methodical approach' I have
not had to adjust the roadster mixture or balance for about three years now,
and
only slight changes to the idle speed to compensate for plug and point wear,
reversed back out at the next replacement.
Carbs should be mechanically sound, but you can still get good results with
some
wear (thank heavens).
Valves and ignition should be checked and adjusted first, also float height.
Slacken throttle linkages, disconnect choke cable and adjust fast-idle screws
clear of cams.
Screw both jets up till they are flush with the bridge, then screw them down
two
turns.
Start the engine and adjust the idle screws independantly to get a balance.
Adjust both jets up or down by the same amount to get the correct mixture.
Set the clearance between the throttle shaft stop and the choke interconnecting
rod to .12in, then move each throttle shaft lever downwards until the lever pin
rests lightly on the lower arm of the fork, and tighten the throttle shaft
lever
clamp bolts.
Check that the carbs are still synchronised as the throttle is slightly opened,
if not check the previous step again.
Reconnect the choke cable, ensure the jets return fully home when the choke is
pulled out and pushed in, pull out the choke about 1/4" and set the fast idle
screws so that they open the carbs the same amount (i.e. still synchronised)
and
adjust for the recommended fast idle speed.
If ever you have need to adjust the mixture or idle speed again, always adjust
both nuts/screws by the same amount or you will have to start all over again.
Good luck,
PaulH.
