I quote the LUCAS Technical Series booklet on 'Starters'....
Lubrication.
The starter does not normally require attention during
service, and no lubrication is required other than to the starter motor
bushes. The pinion should be cleaned with a petrol moistened cloth.
It goes on to say that clutch dust collects on the assembly if you oil
it, and jams it all up. How ever, the HELIX sleeve should have SAE5 oil
on it, ( this is inside the bendix.)
