Hello all,
I called a few local joints tonite about getting some new rubber for my
'74 'B. Just for fun, I asked the places if they could install tires on
wire wheels, and to my surprise all of them said they could! I went as far
as explaining what a wire wheel was (so they wouldn't think it was a hubcap
or something), and how delicate they were. One place (National Tire &
Battery) said something like "Oh, yeah, like the kinds of wheels on some old
Jaguars?" I was impressed, to say the least.
How much can I trust these places? One dealer specializes in foreign
cars, but charges more for recaps than many places charge for new tires. I
don't want them to mess up my new wires just because they thought it would
fit on their machine; otherwise, I'd have to kill them. 8-) The only
solution I can come up with is a litmus test of sorts. Bring one of my old
wires that has a tire on it and ask them to remove it for me just to see how
they do it. If they bust the wheel, I go elsewhere. What does anyone else
with wire wheels do or think?
On a similar note, I've been running like a cat who's behind has been
sprinkled with turpentine to get my car finished. TRF's summer party is
this weekend, and I'd like to get my 'B there. As of right now, all I need
is new tires (got my tubes today!) for inspection then the regular legal
crap to get the car on the road legally. Today I spent some time doing
various jobs from Hell. First I replaced my ripped steering rack gaiter
with a new one - on a fun scale of one to ten, I'd give it about a negative
three. Then just to kill time I decided to replace the chrome trim strips
that decorate the car. The PO had all the little clips in a baggie for me,
along with the very straight and clean chrome. This job should have been
easy had the PO not bondoed and welded the holes shut! I feel like I've
been hit by a truck (or Triumph) after drilling 40+ holes in my car AND
trying to keep them lined up. Fun, fun, fun...But, the car is almost
roadworthy!!!
