I would suggest that you have worn thrust washers in your rear differential.
Very common problem on higher mileage B's. I have this in my car as well,
although it has not gotten too bad yet. Repair is possible, but I
understand that it requires splitting the diff case. I may be wrong here.
Perhaps someone else on the list will chime in?
