Sorry to be so late, but I am always days behind on my reading of the
digest, particularly over a weekend.
Close, but the name for the splice is Western Union. It was used to splice
broken telegraph wires.
I don't remember where I learned how to make the splice, but the way I do it
is to skin the wires back, then cross them at the midpoint of the bare wire.
You then wrap the upper side of the X around the straight portion of the
mating wire. Repeat on the other side and you have a strong splice. Don't
forget to solder it before using the shrink-wrap.
Soldering: remember to heat the joint with your iron, and then apply the
solder to the joint, not the iron, until it melts into the joint.
