Datsun Z cars, the early ones from the 70's & 80's had wheels that are a
direct replacement for the MGB. The 280 & non-turbo 300 Z cars had a
collapsable spare that, when inflated, was a full sized tire. I have one
in each of my cars. The Z's which had them also included a compressed
gas cannister for inflation. They are getting very hard to find in the
salvage yards, as those cars are regularly being crushed. I believe the
collapsable spare came in some of the 260 Z's as well. Note that the
ones from the 300 Z are 15", not 14. If you use one, it is necessary to
have a means of inflating them. Datsun supplied a gas bottle, but after
all these years, they would be suspect. A friend was able to buy a new
cannister from the Nisson dealer a year or so ago, but expensive. There
are some nice battery powered compressor/emergency light things out
there that will work. I stole a trick from the motor cycle crowd &
hollowed out an old spark plug & prazed it to an air line fitting, added
some hose & a tire inflator end, & this is what I carry. Just replace a
sparkplug, & start the motor. It will idle a little rough, but do no
dammage in the few minutes it takes to fill the tire. After all, all a
gasoline motor is, is an air pump.
Regards lug nuts, it is important to get matching nuts with any wheel
purchase. For wheels with tapered seats, several different angles are
out there, as well as flat seats. If nuts & seats do not match, you will
strain the wheel centers, inviting cracks & ultimate failure.
