I know this has been discussed in various bits and pieces, but I seem slow
to absorb information these days. I am getting ready to do a complete
tuneup on my 78 B. While it runs great, a few things seem out of place.
They include:
1) It takes full choke to get her started. She starts immediately and runs
great out of the box. However, I have to keep her choked until reaching
full operating temperature. If I don't she coughs severely under moderate
acceleration.
2) Once engine temperature is reached, she seems to run slightly warm.
3) Idle is about 1100 rpm or so and is kinda lumpy. I always feel the need
to goose her once or twice at stoplights to make her smooth out a bit.
4) The spark plugs tend to blacken a little with a dry soot. I'm guessing
this is due to my usual short driving distance coupled with the need to
choke on warm-up.
She was tuned by an MG specialist right before I bought her last
summer--primarily to get her past the state emissions check (which she
passed with flying colors.) I don't know, but I suspect they left
everything the same after getting past emissions. Is it a safe assumption
that I need to back off the timing a bit? Any other pointers?
Thanks!
