Dave,

There are a few things that could be causing this.  

Either the anti-vibration plunger that is mounted in the selector housing
(right rear large bolt) is worn or missing, or its spring is bad/missing.

Or, one or both of the gearshift locating pins (small bolts on sides of
selector housing) are worn or sheared off.

Or, simply the gear lever retainer is loose. This is the round plate thing
that holds the lever in the slector housing.

I'd look at and repair if necessary these three things.  After doing this,
make sure the shift lever gets a healthy coat of grease.  That should quiet
things down.
