I just did a compression test on my 1966 MGB engine, and I got the following
results:
cylinder 1, 130 dry, 145 wet
cylinder 2, 70 dry, 90 wet
cylinder 3, 105 dry, 120 wet
cylinder 4, 150 dry, 170 wet
When I did the test the engine was cold which is not standard operating
procedure. I'm in the middle of rebuilding the carbs so there wasn't
anything I could do about that.
Looks like the head needs some work, but what do these numbers tell me about
the rings?
All plugs were light brown/tan, even though no. 2 had a bit of a crust.
I'm going to pull the engine tomorrow (new clutch and rear seal) and I was
going to pull the head as the valve stem seals and valve guides need work.
Before I start taking the bottom end apart, however, I'd like to hear if
anybody knows what an increase of 15 to 20 from dry to wet tells one about
the condition of the rings.
