Hi,

the last time I worked with my mechanic friend we did exactly that. It is
not the recommended way to go (which is to pull the lot out) but it can
make things a little easier.

We had a couple of small logistical problems.

1) We couldn't get the oil cooler off, so we disconnected the hoses at the
engine end, then undid the radiator surround then lifted and turned that
over and to the side, so the oil hoses remained in place through the
surround.
2) Remember which bolt came from where. Some are different lengths but
look much the same.
3) Whilst you're in there consider replacing the engine mounts and earthing
strap, and really you ought to fit an entire new clutch assembly (unless
you really like pulling the engine out).
4) Reassembly literally is in the reverse order of removal, but it can be a
bit fiddly getting the rear of the engine lined up with the clutch bell
housing.

I am sure there are many more details that I have forgotten, but you will
discover all of them once you get started.

Be very careful with the engine. Get it down onto the floor or a low
trolley so it doesn't have far to fall if it should try, also it is
alarmingly heavy, so have assistance when you do the job, and if it slips
let it go.

I think the VC studs are the correct place to attach the hoist, but check a
workshop manual (or wait for other list replies) first.

Take care,

Andy

Well, the time has come to replace my clutch throw out bearing. I am
replacing just the bearing, not the plates.

Can i remove just the engine for this? I am doubtful that my garage
rafters can support the weight of the engine and tranny. Also, I really
don't want to crawl under there and remove the driveshaft.

Finally, where is the best place to attach the chain to lift the engine? I
imagine the studs that hold the valve cover in place would be the best
place, but anybodt have any comments?
