There was quite a bit of discussion of the engine oil vs hypoid gear oil
in transmissions. One of the opinions offered was that hypoid gear oil
has a high sulfur content and is deadly to the brass synchros. The "all
British" mechanic who most recently botched my transmission recommended
a strict diet of 30wt. But then my second gear synchro is shot and
it sometimes refuses to go into second, synchro notwithstanding, so take
it with a grain of gear bits.
Previous to that, I always put in 20wt50.
Next time, I rebuild it myself.
