        Formica won't work. It is too thin and flimsy. What you need is
1/8 or 1/4" Masonite. It won't warp or soak up  water. You can find the
1/8" stuff at any building supply store. Just get a piece of the
stuff
that they use to re do bath bath tub areas. One brand name is Marlite.
