If it overheated (which it was prone to do) it would blow the intake
gasket at the water port, allow water to wash down the "valley", across
the camshaft. Of course this took the lubrication with it, so the cam was
trying to run dry. Meanwhile, the crankcase was filling up with a mix of
oil, water and anti-freeze. All the above with no sign of external leaks.
When I worked at the local Caddy dealer, we had one mechanic who could
change the cam in a 4.1 cad. in less than half the time the flat rate
book called far. Of course, it was because he probably replaced more of
them than the average factory worker installed!
