Hi Larry:
I see you have been busy researching engines as I have lately. I was quite
surprised to see the power output of the old 215 in its "hot" version in
1962 and '63. The Buick/Pontiac versions had a compression ratio of 11 to
1 (remember real gas?) and made 190 horesepower at 4800 rpm with a
four-barrel Rochester.
The Olds version was famous for being the first Turbocharged American car
(possibly the world's first). The Olds Jetfire produced 215 hp (one per
cubic inch) and 300 foot pounds of torque from its alcohol-injected turbo
version of the aluminum V8. That same year saw the use of a turbo on the
Corvair Monza but the Olds was first.
I think Phil was forgetting the TR8 as some Brits would prefer to do to the
whole line of wedges. I suspect he was thinking of the Stag and hoping
that people would again make the mistake of assuming that the Stag used the
Rover engine.
