fan noise

Hello list.  I realize that at some point in my 76 `B's past, a metal
six-blade fan was added in place of the yellow plastic one
(mechanical).  How loud should this fan be when the engine is turning?
It gets pretty noisy over 3000rpms and the other day I had it at 4500rpm
in 3rd (passing) and all I could hear was fan.  Could I have the fan
installed backwards, or should I just switch to an electrical fan?
