Larry,
Thanks for asking. I've been quiet for lack of a computer, no other
reason. We got moved up to Virginia on the 6th, but waited until we
got the new place painted to unpack everything, so I've just had the
computer up and running for the past two days.
The engine is fine. I was a little worried, because I got it back
about 48 hours before we had to start the 900 mile trip to move up
here. I drove it around town for about 600 miles at varying speeds
trying to give the rings a fighting chance, and then we left for
Virginia. The oil pressure idles at 50 psi, and the relief valve is
opening at about 70 or 75 psi. Above 3000 RPM, the oil pressure
stays pegged at 70 or 75, regardless of how long I've been driving.
The only thing that we did differently on this rebuild, other than
the new crank, was that we replaced the oil cooler and lines. I cut
open the old lines, and it looks like part of the inner wall of the
line had separated, and was acting as a one-way check valve,
blocking flow once the oil flow got up to a certain point. That
might explain the oil pressure bouncing back and forth between 50
and 55 psi rapidly.
My mechanic said that it was a valuable experience, and from now on,
he's going to automatically replace the cooler and lines whenever he
rebuilds an MGB engine. The reason I didn't do it last time was that
the rebuild was an unexpected expense, and the extra $160 on top of
the $1900 was just too much. Serves me right. Well, all is right
with the world now, and I'm enjoying my 'B' again. I sure missed it.
Scott
