Back in the summer of 1966, I used to drive a 65 Spitfire from Norfolk
VA where my ship was ported to Chattanooga via Atlanta on Friday night/
Saturday morning and return back to the ship on Sunday night. 685 miles
one way from the gate at the piers to my driveway. That's 1370 miles per
weekend. And I did it for about 10 straight weekends. I was dating at
the time and was also the Captain's driver while aboard ship so I had
every weekend off. I put about 20,000 miles on that LBC in about 2 1/2
months. I must have been out of my mind!
