I believe the bulk of the 'erroneous' post was mine. I aggree with the =
revision. I used a poor choice of words when referring to 'edges'. =
Splines should have 'square' corners. (Therefore they have sharp edges? =
OK!) As they wear, they develop points. Unfortunately I was referring =
to the points as sharp and not the 'edges' of the corners. And yes, =
once the points get sharp enough, they become round.
Now that the issue is perfectly clear.....
I appreciate the clarification on my post..
I get the point!

Subject: RE: The truth about wire wheels
There was a lot of fairly good information in the previous post. I =
deleted=20
most of it to save bandwidth. I do take issue with the comments below. =
The=20
splines start out without sharp edges. Once they wear a bit, the become =
sharp and pointed. Further wear will result in very dull (spun) edges. =
It=20
is sort of like chain gears (for timing chains, bicycle chains, etc.) =
They=20
start off with dull points. If the points become sharp, it is still =
usable,=20
and in fact still fairly good, but a lot of wear has occurred. Forget =
to=20
oil the chain and gears, and sooner or later the boints will be gone, =
thus=20
inducing a spin of the chain.
>Check the wires. Are any broken or loose? Look into the spline - are =
the=20
>edges sharp or are they flat? Flat is bad, sharp is good with the =
following=20
>caveat - sharp can be bad but this is rare (if the wheel spline is so =
worn,=20
>the flat edge begins to sharpen again due to loose fit and clunking and =
this=20
>is very bad but also rare).
>no significant abuse (hole shots, curbs ...). The splines should all =
have=20
>nice sharp edges. When you put the wheel on the car **do not =
overtighten**=20
