It's OK to put some powdered graphite on it, but that's all one needs to
do. There will be some oil accumulation on it soon enough (from the
other cars on the road, of course). The drive gear gets hurled forward
by the sudden start of the starter motor while the standing inertia of
the gear tends to hold the gear still until it engages in the flywheel.
