Chris, I have done the Pertronix conversion.  It worked great.  One
caution however.  If you inadvertently hook the positive and negative
wires incorrectly, even just a moment, you'll cook the electronics and
the unit will be junk.  There is fairly good troubleshooting information
included with the unit.  You will need a meter to check it however.  One
other thing you might want to do is call Pertronix directly.  They have a
toll free number and they are very helpful.
