I think I now know what is wrong with My MGA. Either someone once died in
it and it's haunted (in which case I could really use our much beloved
High Priestess, Denise) or the Lucas electronics have just taken over ala
Kit the Knightrider or Herbie the Love Bug 8-(
During the week I had about 2 seconds of spare time, so with no key I
pulled the starter switch and it turned over (you may remember the battery
just hissed before). So today, with wife and child gone for the weekend,
I head out timidly to the garage. She fired right up! So I backed her
out and went to work on the accessories. Fuel guage - OK, wipers - OK,
brake lights - OK, parking lights (front) and turn signals still out. I
found a melted red wire in the harness and replaced that, and now have
parking lights all the way round. I hooked up the turn signals without
the flasher and all seems well, so I thought I just needed a new flasher.
At this point, I think all that I did was put the lenses back on the front
parking lights, and put back the old flasher (and 3 wires which ground
there - are these right?). Jumped in to put her away, and I just get the
hiss from the battery when I pull the starter. Seriously, do I need to
fly Denise all the way back here to perform an excorsism? Will she turn
my car into an 1100? Is there a capicitor or something somewhere that's
getting a charge on it which takes several days to leak out? For a while
when I was hooking stuff up, I started the beast after each new accessory,
but that got old and was really running down the battery, so I quit
that and now I really don't know what's killing it. I do know this:
school starts Wednesday, summer's over for me (not that I got to take one
day off), and if I don't get this thing on the road pretty soon, it's
going to the high bidder on this list, and I'm going to get a Miata and
love it just like it's a real car!
Thanks for listening,
Tom, '60 MGA 1600
