Well, the annoying "pinging" on accleration turned into a pinging anytime
I hit the gas pedal. I checked the compression: 1 and 2 both had around
200 lbs, 3 and 4 both had about 120 lbs. I put some oil in number 4,
screwed the compression tester back in, and turned the engine over for
about 5 seconds.
There was a plume of smoke (from the oil) coming from the #3 spark plug
hole.
Blown head gasket.
Luckily, I have a spare one in the trunk.
FWIW - the (blown)head gasket on now was the copper gasket Victoria
British sells.
