Probably a cost thing. A few years ago I've been told that it was the fact
that the stuff came
from South Africa and that made it politically undesirable to use it, at
least over here.
However, even after the political changes in SA I've not seen chrome
returning so my guess is
it is probably a cost issue.
Like copper, e.g. radiator upper and lower parts are nowadays mostly made of
plastics
instead of copper (brass?).
I agree with Mr D that leaving the chrome off new cars doesn't really make
them more attractive.
Come to think of it, many new cars look so much the same, probably due to
windtunnel optimizing etc.
