I just did a little investigation by removing one of the rocker arm ball
studs from a spare 1275 head. The stud threads do not match any size of my
thread gauge: not 24, 27, 28, 32 or up or down. Under a magnifying glass,
the crown of the thread is square, not sharp. A 5/16-24 nut will screw
onto the threads, but is too loose. Nothing else in a jar of miscellaneous
nuts even comes close. The stud itself fits tightly into a 17/64 hole (I
can't push it through)
and slides loosely through a 9/32 hole. Looks like it is a special thread
(naturally).
For valve cover gaskets, I usually use a gasket adhesive on the valve cover
side, and nothing on the head side.
That way when I remove the cover again, it comes off (most of the time) in
one piece and is reusable.
