Doug,
Thanks for your perspective on tire changing.
My back-up car is a Toyota Corolla that I have had for
12 years and now has 201,000 miles on it. During that
time it has only had one flat tire. If anybody suggested
that I should think of buying some tire irons and patches
and do my own repair, I too would think that they were
crazy.
This wire wheel Midget is something else though.
While I agree that 95% of the flats were due to bad
preparation of the rims - ignorance on my part,
some were due to nails and now
it seems the valve has gone on one of them.
The local shop charges me about $20 to repair a tire.
I'm not complaining - I know he has to make a living.
He also told me he has to do them by hand because,
being wires, he couldn't use his machine. He can never
do it "while I wait" so thats 2 trips into town. Maybe 3 if
he hadn't got round to it. =
Besides, if a job wasn't too difficult, isn't it in the MG spirit
to do it yourself. Most times, you can do a better job, anyway.
Another point is that I hate being dependent on someone else
and I thought that with a small investment in tire irons, patches and =
a couple of inner tubes I would be all set.
I've never attempted to repair a flat. Hence my post to you guys.
It was just a thought, that's all.
