It is probably a good idea to put the trans and engine together, make
sure the clutch is lined up, etc while it is all out of the car. It does
not make installing the engine all that much harder, and it is easier. I
would put the starter, distributor on before installing. Carbs is up to
you. Rent an engine tilter to make maneuvering the assembly easier.

Everything is pretty accessible with the engine in, but if you know they
need rebuilding it might be a little easier with the engine out.
