If dropping the handbrake allows the engine to stop then the brake circuit 
diode 
fitted behind the dash on the passenger side could be short-circuit.  If the 
handbrake has no effect then suspect a short-circuit diode in the alternator, 
which can also cause the ignition light to glow dimly all the time or not at 
all.
