To quote the factory manual, '72 version:

************************ text import start ***************************

Unscrew the oil cap at the top of each suction chamber, top up with oil
to within 1/2" (13 mm.) from the top of the hollow piston rod. Under no
circumstances should a heavy-bodied lubricant be used.

Failure to lubricate the piston dampers will cause the pistons to
flutter and reduce acceleration.

********************** text import end ********************************

Note that this edition of the factory manual does not call out the
weight, or the type, of oil for the dashpots.

Note that if you tune your carbs on the lean side, you'll need a heavier
oil; conversly, if you tune them on the rich side, you can get away with
a very light viscosity oil... but you'll never pass an emissions test.

TTUL8r, Kirk Cowen (who uses 10-30 engine oil after trying everything
                      else mentioned so far)
