Subject: Synchromesh death??

I just recently joined the mailing list, and I hope everyone doesn't mind a
newbie popping in, but I do have one or possibly two questions.
1. My father and I, my dad 42, me 16, have recently bought a 1974 1/2 MGB GT,
in Feb. of 97 actually, from McB's Motorcars in Bridgeville, Pa<--Great MG
shop.
Well, we drove it during the winter, had no problems besides the
complimentary fluid drip. Well, after our beautiful GT decided to shead ALL
of it's Trans. fluid, which we replaced, we've gotten a nasty almost grinding
when shifting from 1st to 2nd, actually, it was happening a few weeks before
it dropped the trans. fluid. Well, we replaced the trans' fluid with
Kendall's 80/90, or 75/90?? not sure which oil, and the problem wasn't AS
bad, but still very apparent, is this the sign of a worn synchromesh?? I've
heard this is an expensive repair, we will be installing an O/D within the
next 2 years, so if it is this, we'll have it done then, any other ideas as
to what it might be??
2. The previous owners completely rebuilt the engine, it was bored out to 2
liters, had a Weber SK Racing carb. installed, new headers, and cam, and some
other fancy parts that I don't know the name of, now, we've experienced
occasional "preignition" or "dieseling", can this be due to the SK carb.
being in need of adjustment, or, could it be due to low octane fule being
used?? I currently use 88 octane, but, I am willing to use 93 if that's
necessary.
Thanks for any help that can be given!!! Ian
