The bottom of the coil is an extruded, seamless, cup. The top of the
coil has several contacts and junctions that extend into the coil. The
coil is filled with oil for both insulation and cooling. If the coil
losses it's oil, it fries very fast and leaves the driver looking for a
garage.

Thus, having the coil upside down is much more efficient for oil
drainage and promotes quick and efficent coil maintenance. Cracks that
develop over time or from vibration can be diagnosed much quicker as the
car dies in a non-spradic and immediate way.
