To get to the left engine mount bolt on a B it helps to remove the
steering shaft. (You probably have to remove it).
I've done this in the past by removing the entire steering rack -
disconnect the steering shaft u-joint, remove four bolts on the top of
the rack, remove the two bolts attaching the steering to each wheel,
pull the whole rack out.
This weekend someone showed me another method - disconnect the
steering shaft u-joint, remove the bottom cover plate of the steering
rack housing (I'm making up names, I mean where the steering shaft
connects to the rack), slide the shaft out the bottom, rotating the
shaft until the gears disengaged.
Which method do others out there prefer, and why?
It seems to me that pulling the whole rack means you don't need to
deal with any liquids and you don't have to worry about getting any
dirt in the steering gear housing, but the bolts attaching the rack to
the wheels can be stubborn to remove. Any other points I've
overlooked?
Cheers,
Joe
