67 pos earth tach read too high.

I just got the 67 GT that had been stored for about 13 years running
(and well I might add). Some of my problem in adjusting the carbs is
that I was trying to get the tach to show an idle of around 1100 but
just could not get a smooth idle unless is was around 1500 to 2000
rpm's. so After setting it that high took it out for a drive and whoa..
in second gear at not more than 156 miles an hour it shows 6500 rpm's
..what is the problem here?
